Shangri-La - Knopfler's best yet

Mark Knopfler has evolved with every solo release, and Shangri-La is no different. This time Knopfler has got closer to the folksy/earthy feel he is trying to achieve. And as a long time Mark Knopfler fan, I can honestly say his songwriting gets better with age. Knopfler seems to be able to write about anything from Ray Kroc to Sonny Liston. One thing that does disappear with each solo release is long guitar solos. So if your looking for a Speedway at Nazerath outro on this album, you best skip it. That's not to say Knopfler's guitar playing isn't evident, whats there is less obvious but more powerful. Like his songwriting Knopfler's guitar playing has matured. I can't pick a bad song on this album, without doubt, Knopfler's best solo work yet. I hope there is more to come.

Imaginary utopia?

Mark Knopfler's beautiful album, particularly the title track, once again confirms his mastery of versatile song-writing, guitar playing and superb production.

Mark Knopfler at his best

Once again another great Knopfler classic. A superb album in every way with lyrics reflecting that dry humour in so many songs. Worth every penny and a relaxing listen, love it!

At a time when punk and new wave were making technique for its own sake seem irrelevant, and metal was taking the guitar solo in noisier and unpredictable directions, Knopfler's clean but dexterous picking proved there was still room for traditionalism and...
