Album Review

Jason Mraz made quite an impression in 2003 — the anti-John Mayer even as he was his peer. Mraz built a nationwide coffeehouse on the strength of singles like "The Remedy (I Won't Worry)" and "You and I Both," and those tracks anchor this pleasant live set. Tonight, Not Again finds Mraz to be an engaging performer, able to flutter his voice up and down through registers with incredible ease. He's performing music tailor-made for the Aware Records crowd — Midwestern college students, open-mike hosts, and guys with beards. Mraz's twittering following eats up every morsel of Tonight, from the soft tones of the title track opener through the drifting "Sleeping to Dream" (his own "Wonderland") and the rousing, smartly lyrical "Too Much Food." Mraz is also shown to have a classic rock flair in his songwriting. "Absolutely Zero" references Pink Floyd's "Us and Them," "Common Pleasure" and "Curbside Prophet" stretch into scat and percussion-filled jams, and he does a nice cover of Elton John's "Rocket Man." John Popper guests, the horn section is a nice touch, and pretty soon Tonight, Not Again becomes a fan-friendly breeze. [Some editions of Tonight, Not Again included a DVD portion with behind-the-scenes footage.]

He's a curbside prophet

I was first introduced to Jason at a Tracy Chapman gig in Liverpool years ago. He was her support band and completely wiped the floor with her... He is amazing! Particularly live! He normally plays acoustically or with Toca Rivera. This album is his first venture with a 'band' sound and it is just superb. He is so spontaneous and a delight to see and hear. If you get the opportunity, download from America "Live at Java Joes". It's an acoustic set recorded from the soundboard.... just superb!!! If you can't find it, you will get it on his website.

One of the best live albums I've heard

Superb live album, from a fantastic songwriter, with a beautiful, pure voice. A great array of songs from his early career. This album becomes more special when you hear how much more emotional and involving songs like "Absolutely Zero" and "Sleeping To Dream" are performed live by Jason than they are on the studio albums. Also check out his Geeking Out The Galaxy albums for fantastic live versions of "Mr Curiosity" and "On Love, In Sadness" - a brilliant live performer - the DVD of this concert is incredible too.

An unmissable album

Mraz is just wonderful. After seeing him live twice last year i decided to get my hands on this live album already owning more or less everything else he's done from The cutting room floor right to MR-AZ. I LOVE this album - definitely my favourite. It captures his humour and rapport with the audience aswell as his unbelievable voice. My fave tracks are 1000 things and No stopping us although it's really hard to pick. If you're a fan and you dont already own it - BUY IT even though you'll probably have the album versions already. If you're not yet then BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT! He really is aMRAZing!
