Album Review

Slender Sherbet is a collection of re-recorded versions of songs from Momus' '80s albums (up to but not including Hippopotamomus), when his songwriting voice and misanthropic worldview were solidifying. This collection gathers a great many of the high points from those years, but the songs aren't necessarily improved in their new versions. There are some interesting variations and reworkings, but too many of the re-recordings feel tossed off compared to the old ones, whether in the more lackadaisical vocals or the less detailed arrangements. However, given the scarcity of Momus' frequently brilliant Creation albums, this may be the only way for American listeners to hear these songs. Which means that Slender Sherbet takes on much greater stature, as a primer of Momus' early career, than the immediate results might indicate.

Customer Reviews

melancholy, intelligent and somewhat sinister at times

I recall being very fond of this album when I was younger, but could never stop myself feeling somewhat repulsed by the insinuation of "the guitar lesson", and I never bought any more of his work. Listening to it now, it still makes me feel uncomfortable. Momus writes some great lyrcis and has a unique sound. not to everyone's taste, and I never listened to anything else he has written but this album - he has clearly written a vast collection in his time - how has he matured? not sure I will bother to find out.

Born in 1960, Currie spent time living in Greece and Canada before returning to Scotland to attend university; in 1981, he dropped out of school to form the Happy Family, a band additionally comprising three prior members of Josef K. After signing to the 4AD label, the group recorded only one LP, 1982's The Man on Your Street,...
