Editors’ Notes

Joan Armatrading has been one of music’s most underrated performers; she's been recording consistently strong albums since the early ‘70s. This concert from London’s legendary Royal Albert Hall shows a 59-year old Armatrading every bit as powerful as anyone half her age. Her songs are classics: “Show Some Emotion”, “All the Way from America”, “A Woman In Love” and “Love and Affection” fuse together elements of folk, R&B, romantic balladry and the blues into an effective modern mix. Her tight back-up group packs a density into each tune, while the sparse piano version of “The Weakness In Me” is most chilling, as her voice can still reach the peaks effortlessly. “Heading Back to New York City”, “Best Dress On”, “Into the Blues” and “My Baby’s Gone” show her various approaches to the blues, all with her enlightening guitar work. “You Rope You Tie Me” trades up the funk. “Me, Myself, I” is an attractive pop anthem. Armatrading can do it all. Here, in what is clearly her best live album to date, she does it beyond peer.

Superb as always

I have seen joan many times, she is without doubt one of the greatest singer songwriters ever and with her impeccable mindset to give 100% to everything she does. She is a true music visionary as can once again be heard with this live album. Stunning, beautiful and without any doubt, a genius.

In 1970, she met lyricist Pam Nestor, and the two began collaborating on material later featured on Armatrading's 1972 debut,...
