The greatest living Japanese director and his composer

To the layman Japanese cinema is an enigma, carefully crafted stories take on a surreal dimension. None more so than in the case of Takeshi Kitano, he is the God of Japanese cinema. From the excellent Hana-bi (Fireworks in Japanese) through to Kikujiro his work shows a detailed attention to detail and a following of popular themes. They all end at the seaside, most are violent in the extreme and all beautifully shot. That said the music makes the films. If you listen to Kikujiro it makes the film. Indeed it has been used as the signature tune for awards ceremonies as well. Just listen and watch any of his films, they add a real dimension to Japanese cinema. In fact buy the films and listen to the music. Enjoy

Not since Leone / Morricone has soundtrack and film matched so perfectly

This is stunning stuff - Hisaishi's calm and beautiful music providing a fitting backdrop to Kitano's masterful direction. If you've never seen Sonatine, do yourself a favour and watch it - the 'Play on the Sands' scene is unique.
