Unspeakably good

Quite possibly one of the best live, solid rock acts of all time. Great rarities to be found here too!

Heartbreakers at their best!

This anthology has been long in the works, but the result is staggering. This is one of the best bands in the world doing what they do best - playing live.

Don't get me wrong...

This is one of my favourite albums i've bought all year. The music is fantastic, these tracks are the true way to experience petty no doubt about it.

My beef is with the mastering. If you look at the album artwork, you'll see plastered all over it kitschy stuff like "hi fidelity audio technology" and "audiophile resolution". This is a lie. Now, given the brilliant mastering job on the cd that came with the mudcrutch vinyl release last year, it's clear that Petty cares about sound quality, and i assume the blu ray disc on the way over priced deluxe edition has been done properly and sounds great. But the CD is awful: compressed and muddy. I can only assume that they made a bad CD mix to make the blu ray one seem better by comparison, a typical move by a record company to trick people into buying more. There's no reason why a CD can't sound as good as blu ray disc.

Petty's tales of American losers and dreamers were simple and direct, but emotionally charged. The Heartbreakers were a lean, tight band that could handle hard rock & roll and melodic pop equally well. The group gained critical attention and solid sales with their first album, but 1979's Damn the Torpedos...
