Building on the jangle-pop tradition R.E.M. instituted back in the '80s, the Wooldridge Brothers turn in a thoroughly appealing debut effort with Star of Desire. The duo concentrates on solid songwriting, garnishing their sturdy songs with violins, acoustic guitars and crisp melodies. They have a strong melodic sense; they write full songs, not just hooks, and their country and folk leanings add depth to their ringing guitar-pop. Ultimately, Star of Desire is a well-crafted record of rootsy pop that only gets better with repeated listens.
