iTunes Review

Polly Harvey says she aimed for “absolute beauty” on her most upbeat, direct record yet. She’s certainly been reinvigorated by a love affair but that doesn’t mean her edges and explosiveness have been dulled. A simple drums-bass-guitar set-up carves the melodic lushness and “This is Love” declares its carnal desires with a dopamine rush of blues-punk, while “Big Exit” wraps the insecurities of love in a buzz of dual guitars and counter-melodies. Don’t expect a happy ending either: Thom Yorke duet “This Mess We’re In” is gorgeous but heavy-legged with impending trouble.

Best Album From The PJ

An immaculate album, from start to finish. Stand-out track is "Good Fortune" although every track could easily be your favourite. If you ever go to visit New York, make sure this is on your iPod, truly, truly remarkable.

Contains one of the most sublime tracks ever written

PJ Harvey is great at the best of times, but combine her with one of the greatest and most distinctive voices of our era and you have "This mess we're in" with Thom Yorke - a haunting melody that just lilts over the sunset of an autumn NYC sunset. Every track on this album is PJ Harvey at her peak, but the duo with Yorke makes Stories from the City something particularly special

The best album of the last 10 years.

At the outset, she led the trio PJ Harvey, which delivered her stark songs with bruisingly powerful,...
