Surprising

It really is surprising listening to these recordings, which have had such rave reviews in most quarters. I have to say I am disappointed. My expectations were high. I suppose the notes are all there. But that’s about it. Has this all been media hype? I think perhaps. Far be it from me to offer opinions that would influence people’s buying habits, but if you want to invest in a recording of Shostakovich’s string quartets I would suggest you at least listen to the Borodin Quartet on Chandos or the later recordings on Melodiya by the Kopelman led Borodin. Probably the Fitzwilliam Quartet too and the Beethoven. Then decide. If Emerson is for you then you have made an informed choice. But don’t just rely on the critics’ reviews.
