Album Review

Over a century after their first incarnation, the Band of H.M. Royal Marines released their first album with a major label (Decca), with this 17-track collection, Summon the Heroes. Recorded at BBC's Maida Vale Studios under the guidance of musical director Lt. Col. Nick Grace, the Portsmouth-based group of musicians performs an array of traditional sea shanties and naval songs ("A Life on the Ocean Wave," "Hands Across the Sea") in addition to covers of pop songs originally recorded by Rod Stewart ("Sailing") and Faith Hill ("There You'll Be"), a collaboration with Blackpool tenor Alfie Boe ("Over the Hills and Far Away"), and a unique musical adaptation of the 1939 original "The King's Speech." ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi

Being a fellow bootneck, listening to this took me through the highs and lows of my career.

There is something for everyone within this album. Truly brilliant album.

Pure excellence

Pure pure excellence well written and is a joy to listen to. Was at first debating on if it was worth it but by God it is.

They might not be REAL Royal Marines but the best fighting force in the world deserves the best military band in the world....and this proves that ,once again, the Royal Marines Band are at the top of the musical tree. As a former 'Bootneck' who served 22 years, I may be somewhat 'biased' , can't argue with the fact that year after year they keep producing some great stuff and every year another celebrity singer or musician want to attach themselves to the RM it up lads and lasses and well done!!! Get on Royal...HOOFING!!!😜

Originally formed in 1903, and now based at the Royal Marines School of Music at HMS Nelson in Portsmouth, the bands consist of musicians who are required to master both a string and a wind instrument. The various band entities have released dozens of independent albums in conjunction with their operational military duties since the 1980s. But it wasn't until 2011, when the...
