Album Review

The Eurythmics' breakthrough album is a deft mix of electronic thrills, new wave chills, and sultry R&B, the latter supplied by Annie Lennox's warm tenor. Pretty much relying on themselves, Lennox and Dave Stewart slip past the music's usual coldness and into a territory all their own. It can be smug (the new wave here is served with a side of irony) and a tad dull (the long, operatic pieces serve little purpose), but the payoffs — "Love Is a Stranger" and, especially, the magnificent title tune — are among the finest the genre has to offer. [The 2005 reissue features remastered sound and bonus tracks that originally appeared on singles, as well as a previously unreleased cover of Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love."]

Magic

Annie Lennox & Dave Stewart made a big impact with Eurythmics. Annie Lennox has a very good voice and the ability of Dave Stewart to conjure up such a good line up worked wonders. This might not be a new album but is a good place to start your collection. Eurythmics made good music and this shows why they were so popular and badly missed these days!! (10/10)

Seminal piece of pop

The single is my favourite pop song of all time and this album is a really important, still-relevant slice of electro-pop that paved the way for an entire movement in the 80s and is still being copied today by the likes of Lady GaGa and Goldfrapp. Get it!

Sweet dreams and bass lines

Gotta love it! Haven't heard the album, just downloaded Sweet Dreams (are made of these) cos it's a tune I cannot remove from my membrane x

Formed: 1980 in London, England

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Eurythmics were one of the most successful duos to emerge in the early '80s. Where most of their British synth pop contemporaries disappeared from the charts as soon as new wave faded away in 1984, Eurythmics continued to have hits until the end of the decade, making vocalist Annie Lennox a star in her own right, as well as establishing instrumentalist Dave Stewart as a successful, savvy producer and songwriter. Originally, the duo channelled the eerily detached sound of electronic synthesizer music...
