The best composer you have never heard
It's unfortunate that the music of John Barnes Chance has never reached a wider audience as it is some of the hardest, most complex but ultimately rewarding wind band music in the repertoire. This recording by the Illinois State University Wind Symphony does the master and his legacy a great service and I fully recommend to anyone wanting to expand their wind music horizons beyond the Folk Song Suite and the Military Suites of Vaughan-Williams and Holst that this is their first stop. JBC was a master of harmony and dischord, but somehow merges it with a mixture of both delicate and harsh rhythms, from the beautifully understated Elegy and the Elevato movement in the Symphony No.2, to edgy excitement in Incantation and Dance and the Blue Lake Overture. Incredible.
