West Eastern Divan

Saw the at the Proms this year.None better. Barenboim a Master

Lord Protector

Excellent download and value for money, the quality on my Bose sound system is first class - all nine symphonies and at this quality for under £10.00!! Well worth it!!

Stay away like a plague? Maybe from articles like yours Klingsor!!!

To MusicGeek, your comments are highly opinionated/political (verging on offensive actually) rather than based on carefully reasoned argument with meaningful musical and technical observations to support your opinions. How can you say that Barenboim never had much understanding of Beethoven's music? Says who? His Beethoven cycles (both live and recorded) of the complete piano sonatas, for example, are still regarded as among the greatest, with only the likes of Alfred Brendel coming close to the quality of interpretations and technical performances. I have recordings of both Barenboim's and Brendel's complete Beethoven cycles, and have heard both musicians live several times!
I'd have a tad more respect for you (maybe!) if you talked in technical/musical terms, and based your comments on actual knowledge and experience, about interpretation of Beethoven, orchestral sonority, conducting technique etc.etc
I would personally not buy this set because the recordings sound rather harsh to my ears, even though the interpretations are valid ones. However, any musician's interpretations will always be open to debate with regard to what Beethoven intended. e,g with regard to dynamics, balance, tempo etc

You have also completely missed the point about the title of the album which ties in with Beethoven's own philosophy of music, and indeed life. Perhaps do some research into Beethoven to see what I mean by this. I find your comments naive, antagonistic and based on questionable logic or facts.
Perhaps also read some of Barenboim's own books on music too before you make sweeping, ill-founded, politically motivated and biased comments. He is a highly intelligent man and musician actually!
This is supposed to be a music forum for 'musical' observations and technically related issues such as recording quality! My three star rating by the way is largely based on the latter! Personally, I stand by my complete Karajan set, based on both the interpretations and recording quality etc My personal taste, but I am nevertheless respectful of Barenboim as a great musican too, one of the greatest still living. Also, why are you disrespecting Andrea Bocelli too? Any specific, intelligently thought out reasons? No? I thought not!
By the way, you say there is something seriously wrong with the musicianship of this set. What, based on the title? How illogical is that? Actually, there is something very seriously wrong with your arrogant tone, the lack of substance to your arguments, and above all with the poor standard of your spelling and grammar!
