Album Review

Released in early 2012 but not part of Salvo's simultaneous expanded catalog reissue program, The Very Best of Gilbert O'Sullivan: A Singer and His Songs is a generous 22-track overview of the singer/songwriter’s career. All the big hits are here — "Nothing Rhymed," "Alone Again (Naturally)," "Clair," "Get Down," "Matrimony," "Ooh-Wakka-Doo-Wakka-Day" — and while the compilers don't spend a considerable time on early byroads (there's none of the precocious post-psychedelia of "Mr. Moody’s Garden," for instance), this offers a good cross-section of his highly produced prime and rivals both Rhino’s 1991 comp The Best of Gilbert O'Sullivan and 2004's The Berry Vest of Gilbert O'Sullivan as a first-rate retrospective.

Love it

I love this album. It takes me back to my earliest appreciation of the charts. Proper music. Now I fear I'm sounding like my dad! Nevertheless, this is a great album and quality always survives.

The Very Best of Gilbert O' Sullivan - A Singer and His Songs

Some great tracks here to get the brain and memories of the past flashing back to you! You needn't buy the whole album but tracks like 'Matrimony, Nothing Rhymed, Alone Again (Naturally)' will give you flashbacks of seeing Gilbert at the piano wearing his famous 'tank-top' jumpers. What's three or four quid spent on such classics!

Brilliant album throughout !! All time classic !!

This man is a musical genius & listening to all his great works on one album is an absolute joy. Alone again is my all time favourite with poignant lyrics throughout this track and the rest of the album. Music to reach you on every level and stay with you forever.

Singer/songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan successfully combined a flair for Beatlesque popcraft with an old-fashioned music hall sensibility to emerge as one of the most distinctive and popular new performers of the early 1970s. Born Raymond O'Sullivan in Waterford, Ireland on December 1, 1946, he went on to attend art school in Swindon, England, writing songs throughout his formative years and sending out demo tapes to little avail. After graduating he went to work in a London department store; one of...
