From Memory To The Sea

I'm not sure how much I expected from this album - I knew I'd be getting a good one, yet this reaches considerably further than that, carefully unravelling itself to emerge an early high point in 2011's musical cellar. While John Darnielle has never possessed a voice to make angels swoon, as a lyricist he has few peers. Waits, Cave, Cohen, Morrissey - Their fame and renown dwarves his, but he stands comfortably alongside them as one of the great architects of the written word in song.

To top it off, it contains The Mountain Goats' most intriguing music, showing more variation and texture than any of its predecessors, with the memory slaying Outer Scorpion Squadron a beautiful, sweeping highlight accompanied by lyrics to match.

I expected a good album, I got one which I think is probably closer to great...I suspect I may be back to award another star if it holds up this well over the next few months. £7.99 well invested.

Love the Goats saw them live recently and are amazingly good even with a fever! I can't recommend their music enough.

Old fan
