Album Review

This 2010 budget-priced compilation from Camden serves as a nice companion piece to 2004's Polaroids: A Greatest Hits Collection, offering up a nice mix of hits ("Sunny Came Home," "Shotgun Down the Avalanche," and "Get Out of This House") and deep cuts ("When the Rainbow Comes, "Never Saw Blue Like That") from the talented singer/songwriter's large canon of work that leans harder toward the deep end of the pool.

And the Rest of

Another hits collection follows 2004's 'Polaroids - A Greatest Hits Collection' and is curiously missing any tracks from the single new studio album Shawn has released since (2006's 'These Four Walls'). The usual suspects are here - 'Steady On', 'Sunny Came Home', Get Out Of This House', 'Polaroids' and her Police cover - along with a few tracks from her festive album and a number of memorable album tracks such as 'A Matter Of Minutes' and 'Shotgun Down The Avalanche'. Also here is the single 'One Cool Remove' from 'Cover Girl' which was left off the previous hits collection in favour of a better song.

However, the selection of supporting tracks hardly constitute the moniker 'Best Of'. Classics such as 'Round Of Blues', 'I Don't Know Why' and 'Whole New You' are missing (but available on the previous collection) and considering Shawn's talent as a singer/songwriter, the number of cover versions here is surprisingly high.

On the plus side, we have 'Never Seen Blue Like That' and 'When The Rainbow Comes' for the first time on a Shawn Colvin release (both previously only available on soundtrack albums). It may perhaps have been better to have focussed more on these rarities than issue a selection of already-available album tracks and released this collection as a companion piece to 'Polaroids'.

As an introduction to Shawn Colvin, 'Polaroids' is a better purchase. As an example of the variety of her work between 1989 and 2001, this is acceptable but will disappoint any fans hoping for something more up to date.

What a voice

Love all her stuff, she is superb, her songs reflect real life, and what a voice

Shawn Colvin is one of the leading lights of the so-called "new folk movement" that began in the late '80s. Although she grew out of the somewhat limited "woman with a guitar" school, she kept the form fresh with a diverse approach, avoiding the genre's clichéd sentiments and all-too-often formulaic arrangements in favor of a more personal, pop-influenced style. Colvin's debut record won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1991, but it was her 1997 single, "Sunny Came Home," that...
