iTunes Editors' Notes

Twenty-five years since Paul Simon's Graceland made its deep impact on popular culture—introducing South African music to many listeners who hadn't previously heard its buoyant rhythms and vocal complexity—the album receives the anniversary treatment. The original album remains a stylistic adventure that hasn't lost its power and has aged quite well. Simon added touches of zydeco and collaborations with Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Los Lobos to a songwriting style that leaned heavily on poetic license and fractured narratives among the surprises. The anniversary edition includes demos, alternate takes, videos, and Simon himself telling the story of Graceland. The extras illuminate Simon's creative process, but it's the final versions of the songs—from the straightforward rock 'n' roll of the title track to the mystical vocal weaves of "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes", "Gumboots", and "Homeless"—that gave the '80s some of its most soulful music, in a decade more often remembered for its technical innovations.

Customer Reviews

Got the original vynal, thank you my wee brother, and onSunday 15th July going to see and hear Paul Simon again. Best album ever.

An incredible album made by so many incredible artists alongside Paul Simon. Happy Memories of listening to my Mum's vinyl copy many years ago. A beautiful album that is best listened to in its entirety. 🌟

My favourite album

Nothing quite like it, a resurrection of sorts, after the relative commercial failure of his "Hearts and Bones" album (H&B) It was in my personal opinion a very good album, but the title of one the tracks train in the distance foretold a greater prize in the form of the Graceland album, which contrary to popular opinion has little to do with the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, but nonetheless provides a backdrop to great music, a collaborative masterpiece which clearly defined Paul as a great artist beyond his great partnership with Art Garfunkel. PS had nothing to prove with this album, but even the harshest critics of his debut solo album H&B - I am led to believe where cementing its place in music folklore within days of its release. One reviewer here said its the best album ever. An understatement, I am sure was it not even better than that!!!

Paul Simon is one of the most successful and respected songwriters of the second half of the 20th century. Rising to fame in the mid-'60s, Simon's songs were mature and literate, but also melodically engaging, and spoke to the concerns and uncertainties of a generation. As the 1960s gave way to the '70s and '80s, Simon's work tended to focus on the personal rather than...
