iTunes Review

Limbo, Panto is a bawdy, baroque dispatch from the lad libido. On Wild Beasts' debut, the Kendal four-piece unpick sex in all its glory, admiring their “length of loinly manliness” on “The Club of Fathomless Love”, a tirade that evokes Kate Bush doing panto. It’s a debut which sets up the unique vocal interplay between Hayden Thorpe and Tom Fleming, while the euphoric frenzy of “The Devil's Crayon” is a highlight and clue to their slinky future.

Best Group Since The Smiths

Limbo, Panto is the finest debut album by a group since The Stone Roses one back in 1989. Each song on the album is a labour of love, complete with lyrics of breathtaking scale and accomplishment. It features two vocalists in the form of Hayden Thorpe and Tom Fleming; the former’s voice a unique experiment sent from outer space, the latter’s a strangely compelling darker drawl. When both combine they combine to brilliant effect, most notably on ‘His Grinning Skull’, one of the highlights of the album. And that is where the Beasts truly excel. There are MANY highlights on this record, from the effusive opener ‘Vigil For A Fuddy Duddy’, to the excellent ‘Devil’s Crayon’ (keep an eye out for this track live, spellbinding) and the majestic and sprawling ‘Woebegone Wanderer’. The first side closes in more sinister tones with ‘The Old Dog’, containing within it one of the most beautiful and disturbing lyrics of recent times, with ‘A human is hauled from the womb’s wired jaw’, haunting stuff! But they keep up this incredibly high standard; ‘Please Sir’ has a lovely operatic vocal from Hayden and the penultimate tracks of new single ‘Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants’ and ‘Cheerio Chaps, Cheerio Goodbye’, give the album a dramatic and classy finish. I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey through this LP, though I fear the less patient listener may lose out here and find it too esoteric.

Something very different!

Don't expect Kasabian or any kind of middle of the road guitar stuff, this is something completely different. Amazing!!

Album of the year

Awesome debut and I'd be suprised if a better album came out this year. Epic, passionate, different. Forget dull guitar bands and embrace the genius that is Wild Beasts.

Formed: Leeds, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

England's Wild Beasts were a duo founded in 2002 by Hayden Thorpe (guitar, vocals) and Ben Little (guitar). Originally called Fauve, the group was joined by drummer Chris Talbot in 2004 and changed its name to Wild Beasts. After recording a self-titled EP, Tom Flemming was recruited as Wild Beasts' bassist, and the band relocated to Leeds, where its energetic sound and Thorpe's theatrical falsetto earned the group a dedicated local following. Wild Beasts released a number of singles on Bad Sneakers...
