Customer Reviews

Have just come from a performance by this new-ish band, The Gloaming. Reading about them beforehand I expected something along the lines of The Chieftains maybe, or one of Donal Lunny's groups - perhaps Coolfin. What I got far exceeded those, already pretty high, expectations. They have taken Irish traditional music to a whole new level, one that is mesmerising, haunting and exciting all at the same time.
Their music envelopes you, taking you to wild, remote Irish gatherings, conjuring up their ancient gods; and to the restless streets of New York with jazz discords and riffs. But always with a traditional music centre. You hear the music in new ways and think 'I never realised just how beautiful that melody could be'!
Try tracks like "Opening Set" (which they played as a closing set this evening), or the bog standard "The Sailor's Bonnet" which is revealed as you have never heard it before, beautiful and haunting.
Take this recording into a quiet room or out onto a wild mountainside and and prepare to be transported.
Five stars aren't enough.

I came to this album totally cold; I was just curious when I saw the cover. After sampling it a few times, made my purchase. I think this is going to become one of those rare gems in music that I will come back to again and again over time. High quality musicianship, haunting tunes and a refresh approach. On first listen through, it kept bringing to mind God Speed You Black Emperor; strange but true.

A great album with the Real World badge of quality.

Has become a staple of my i-tunes collection. Beautiful, unobtrussive music.
