Album Review

Countless blues-rock guitar greats emerged during the late '60s — the most recognizable names being Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. But one who usually gets overlooked is the great Peter Green, who led Fleetwood Mac early in their career. To coincide with the mammoth six-disc box set The Complete Blue Horizon Sessions, a single-disc compilation was issued, The Best of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac (with both releases sharing the same front cover artwork). Although the latter version of Fleetwood Mac is more renowned, it was this early version that influenced a legion of subsequent rock acts, including Aerosmith (who covered Mac's "Rattlesnake Shake"), Judas Priest (who covered "Green Manalishi"), and Gary Moore (who went so far as to purchase Green's favorite Les Paul...from Green himself). And upon investigating this extensive 20-track set, you'll understand why, as the aforementioned tracks, as well as "Albatross," "Stop Messin' Round," and "Shake Your Moneymaker" are all bluesy gems. The Best of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac is an exceptional document of Fleetwood Mac's early years.

This is a great collection of Peter Green's "old " Fleetwood Mac. Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, as always, provide a strong backdrop against which the rest of the band weave a selection of blues material and the more " pop " genre songs like " Oh well ".For me the inclusion of " Oh Well pt 2 " is a special bonus as it is difficult to find on any other F. Mac albums. It sadly got rather overlooked which is a shame as it showed us another side to Peter's music. With it's plaintive, sad feeling, set against a beautiful sympathetic orchestral background, the song exhibits a completely different style to the sort of blues which we associate with Peter's normal contributions. I think that whatever he did, it was always done with tremendous FEELING, whether vocally or instrumentally ; whilst other bands tried to throttle the life out of their guitars, Peter never fell into the trap of playing anything flash or indulgent long solos. That is what distinguished him and is why this C.D. is a must.

Classic British Blues

Representative of the British Invasion in music, there are few that can be above Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac - this is a must for any serious collector's additions.

This is rock at its most brilliant!

The greatest British guitarist

This album is an imperative insight to the sounds that make peter green not only the greatest British guitarist ever but also one of the best of all time . What ever style he was playing his touch and tone are just simply stunning . But it is also I very sad album as it makes you think of the band that fleetwood mac were , but mostly because it makes you realise what we lost when peter green took a walk in the woods with some German hippies .

While most bands undergo a number of changes over the course of their careers, few groups experienced such radical stylistic changes as Fleetwood Mac. Initially conceived as a hard-edged British blues combo in the late '60s, the band gradually evolved into a polished pop/rock act over the course of a decade. Throughout all of their incarnations, the only consistent members of Fleetwood Mac were drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie -- the rhythm section that provided the band with its name....
