For a long time I've searched for a trumpet player like this. This is an absolutely outstanding album, you'd be a fool not to buy it. All I can say is... more please.

I only chanced upon Halsall when I saw his listing at a local live venue. I was intrigued by the description of his music. I checked out what I could find on iTunes and was literally blown away by what I could hear (30 seconds is never quite enough!). I got the album (his second) as it was ridiculously priced (less than £4!). I straight away got 'Sending my Love', his debut, and now this one, as soon as it was released. I listen to a wide range of music but I cannot recall an artist grabbing me so instantly (in such a good way!). I'm a great fan of Miles D n there is something of Halsall's playing that recalls the great man, there is also a mood that suggests the British jazz of the 60s but it's also thoroughly modern. There is a purity in the playing and recording that is enlivening - Halsall seems to prefer to make much from understatement and this brevity is also one of its great strengths. Unlike some of the European jazz though, it also grooves (if you can still use that somewhat out-moded expression) - and Halsall's fondness for appearing in a mix-set also seems to suggest his fondness for beat. At three times the price it would be worth the price - but at £4.74 it feels almost immoral...
