Soul searching, beautiful and raw

I've always been a fan of Sophie B. Hawkins, bought every song without fail, but the anticipation for The Crossing surpassed all recent albums.

Sophie makes songwriting a real art form. She writes from the heart, she writes with passion and love. Many of the songs on this new album dive deep into her personal life and the rawness exposes her personality. Sophie has the amazing ability to reach into your very being and kinda ruffle what you think you feel about something or someone. Track 6 'Heart and Soul of a woman' takes you on a beautiful journey. 'Sinnerman' gives a nod to another amazing artist Nina Simone, the song expertly regenerated for a new audience.

What Sophie does best is to create a pop classic. She has proved this many times over, from 'Damn I wish I was your lover', to 'As I Lay Me Down', to 'Lose your Way' and now 'Georgia', 'Betchya got a cure' and 'The Land, the Sea and the Sky'. All solidly constructed songs, memorable choruses, uplifting/stimulating lyrics and the ones you will be singing all day.

Jazzy undertones reflect in free-flowing percussion (by Sophie herself), beautiful melodies are tied together with thoughtful lyrics. I recommend buying this album if you love good songwriting, if you love the subdued, laid-back sunny tones of Sophies older music. And as a treat, the album contains some never-before-released versions of some other SBH classics.

Worth The Long Wait

I fully agree with the one comment left on I-Tunes. Very happy to see that it was, at least, agreed to release the album. After much anticipation, and reading about Sophie's new album on her website, it left me totally convinced of her artistic skills as it is such a lovely, powerful and well written album.
I am hoping many fans will return and new ones gained, as Sophie truly is a genuine artist.

A proudly idiosyncratic singer and songwriter who embraces an eclectic range of musical influences and isn't afraid to be nakedly confessional in her music, Sophie B. Hawkins enjoyed unexpected commercial success with her debut album, but since then has opted to follow her muse rather than a major label's marketing department. Sophie Ballantine Hawkins was born in New York City on November 1, 1967. Hawkins grew up in a family that valued art and creativity but was troubled by alcoholism, and as a...
