iTunes Review

Pop maestro Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello ("king of punk," in BB's parlance) had such a fine experience writing "God Give Me Strength" together for the film Grace of My Heart that they decided to expand the collaboration into a full-length set. The result was not only Costello's best album in years, it also returned Bacharach to the musically rich sound of his carefully crafted '60s masterworks with Dionne Warwick. Costello's lyrics, at times less direct than those of one-time Bacharach collaborator Hal David, nonetheless perfectly match the complexly emotional style. In fact, Elvis revels not only in dense texts like "My Thief" but cheeky exercises such as "Tears at the Birthday Party" and "Such Unlikely Lovers" with lung-bursting power. A surprise pairing? Maybe, but also one of the happiest in pop-music annals.

ABC - A Brilliant Combination

Costello's voice has never sounded better, with his fashionably flat tone set against the maestro's lush arrangements. God give me strength is surely one of Bacharach's best. A perfect accompaniment to a late night bottle of wine.

the perfect combination !!

Love this album ! every song . Beautiful , Intelligent , songwriting at it"s best . Costello sounds better than ever and the orchestration is Bacharach at his best . Toledo is a good place to start for the curious

A Songwriting Masterclass

On paper, the combination of Bacharach with Costello may not sound like a marriage made in heaven, yet it works magnificently. The quality of songwriting and performance here is terrific and the warmth and humanity of Kevin Killen's engineering work unifies the whole to create a fine collection.

With a hit-single track record spanning four decades, Burt Bacharach became one of the most important composers of popular music in the 20th century, almost equal to such classic tunesmiths as George Gershwin or Irving Berlin. His sophisticated yet breezy productions borrowed from cool jazz, soul, Brazilian bossa nova, and traditional pop to virtually define and undoubtedly transcend the staid forms of Brill Building adult pop during the 1960s. Born May 12, 1928, in Kansas City, he studied cello,...
