Album Review

The Whirlwind is the third studio record by progressive rock supergroup Transatlantic, featuring members of such legendary acts as Spock's Beard, Marillion, and Dream Theater. It was issued in 2009 and marked a return of the band from a nine-year hiatus. The Whirlwind was presented as a double disc: the first disc featured the title track — a 12-part disc-long prog rock symphony — and the second consisted of four new Transatlantic songs and four cover versions.

Blown away

Waiting for the third Transatlantic album filled me with a mixture of excitement and trepidation as I somewhat doubted it would match its magnificent predecessors. I even read that the guys only had a four week window to record a double CD which included a 77 minute piece. I anticipated a rushed and contrived effort. How wrong was I! No it is not in my mind better that SMPTe or Bridge Across Forever but it certainly sits alongside them. The Whirlwind is truly an epic effort with sweeping themes, superb musicianship as expected and imaginative arrangements. The bonus material is excellent too with a combination of original material and covers. The whole thing has more of a group effort feel than the previous two albums and I only hope that this wonderful addition to the sparse Transatlantic discography will not be the last for another 8 years...bring on Volume 4 !

Chilling time

I bought this album for somethng alternitive from my usual metal and got exactly what i was looking for. Its a fab mix of progressive rock with some ace solos fast and slow. Its one to chill out too and relax too as well as been an intreasting thoughtfull album. All i can really say is Is It Really Happening? cos am pretty sure this album is right there with the best of them!!

A grower....

I was a little unsure of this album the first few times I played it..... however, I now finally get it - it's a classic. It's my favourite of the 3 albums, and has some incredible moments. "A Man Could Feel", "Rose Coloured Glasses" - sheer class.

Really hoping these guys do more work in the future.

Biography

Drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment) had a brainstorm that gave birth to the band Transatlantic. He envisioned a band of himself, Neal Morse (Spock's Beard), and Jim Matheos (Fates Warning). As it turned out, Morse was available, but Matheos was not. Morse came up with the idea of recruiting Roine Stolt (Flower Kings) instead, and all that was left was a bassist. Portnoy contacted Marillion's Pete Trewavas and the group was set. They recorded and released their first album,...
