A Lost Gem

I bought this album first time round, from a small record shop in Liverpool, in 1972. I liked the cover, a great reason to buy an album, but I wasn't and have never been disappointed by it, I play it, even now, fairly regularly, and it always takes me away. It's light, trippy, countryfied, multilayered, clever, tuneful, well sung, beautifully produced and fabulously played, with no bad tracks, only one or two that are less good than the others. Boethcher, whose star had slipped by the time this came out, was on top form, assembling his musicians and songs. "The Choice is Yours" was the obvious single, but my favourite always was "Malachi Star", and the almost unaccompanied (except for a guitar) "Without You" is almost perfect. What a pity Boetcher's album never received the recognition it deserved as Electra spent the promotion budget on the Jobriath album, a terrible mistake. Boetcher's career seems to be made up of missed chances and lost opporrtunities, but it's not too late to buy this one.It really is too good to miss.

Although the GoldeBriars' complex harmonies anticipated the...
