Album Review

Philly Golden Classics doesn't have the breadth of the 23-track, double-disc Greatest Hits — and it cuts off at 1976, before some of the disco-era hits for Salsoul — but it does go a little deeper into the group's earlier years. All of the early charting singles — "Armed and Extremely Dangerous," "Smarty Pants," "Guilty," "Newsy Neighbors," "The Player," and "Love Freeze" — are included, in addition to numerous album cuts that deserved better the first time around. The lack of disco smashes "Dr. Love," "Let No Man Put Asunder," "Double Cross," and "Love Thang" makes the set far from definitive, but soul aficionados who are allergic to four-four rhythms and wide-open arrangements (even if First Choice's particular form of disco was soulful through and through) should be adequately pleased.
