Editors’ Notes

A career-cripplingly hard act to follow, The Stone Roses’ shaggy-but-sculpted 1989 debut nevertheless comes by its reputation as one of the finest UK albums ever. The thing is basically a tower of monster singles. All of which—from messianic widescreen-psych come-ons like “I Wanna Be Adored” and “I Am the Resurrection” to “Fool’s Gold”, a wah-wah’d, wiggly wonder that’s arguably the Madchester era’s definitive rave-‘n’-roll anthem—sounded like they’d been around forever upon delivery and will be around forever for precisely the same reason.

One of the true great albums of all time?

They say this is one of the great albums of all time and defines a moment in time like no other! They say any true lover of music should have this in their record collection on principal! Do I agree!? Well in a word yes, and having never really given the album a whirl decided there must be something to all these bold claims given the hype surrounding the 20th anniversary remastered version here. The tracks represent all that was and still is good about British music, and to be quite honest there is not much more to say as the music says it all. You’ll see what I mean! I am amazed this passed me by 20 years ago, but better late than never!

I pinched this tape from HMV cos I wanted it so much way back in 1989 and couldn't afford to buy it. It was my one and only foray into shop lifting. And was worth it. It was, is, and always will be the best album of all time.

One of the few albums that is timeless & like a good wine gets better with age.... Remastered for the 1st time it is an essential purchase & really does sound clearer, however if you are old skool like me then you will be sticking this version in the car cd player & be getting out the original vinyl, blowin off the dust & playing on the record player at home.... Happy days.... The only negative, is how it all went wrong afterwards.... OH WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN....

Formed: 1985 in Manchester, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '10s

Meshing '60s-styled guitar pop with an understated '80s dance beat, the Stone Roses defined the British guitar pop scene of the late '80s and early '90s. After their eponymous 1989 debut album became an English sensation, countless other groups in the same vein became popular, including the Charlatans UK, Inspiral Carpets, and Happy Mondays. However, the Stone Roses were never able to capitalize on the promise of their first album, waiting five years before they released their second record and slowly...
