Album Review

In July of 2009, a year after MGMT broke out with Oracular Spectacular and became a household name for hipsters, Cantora Records re-released the duo's 2005 EP, Time to Pretend. Remastered by Greg Calibi, the disc includes the original versions of the singles "Kids" and "Time to Pretend," along with four tracks that didn't make the full-length. It's interesting to hear the hits before Dave Fridmann got his mitts on them and turned them from homemade laptop electro jams into explosive pop, and the other songs, "Boogie Down," "Destrokk," "Love Always Remains," and "Indie Rokkers" are pretty good, even if they aren't as huge as the cuts on Oracular Spectacular.

Pretentions of Grandeur

With a strong '80's-retro feel (I'm reminded of Big Audio Dynamite, Squeeze and The Waterboys), and a strong synthesizer hook, this tune immediately appealed to me. It's like nothing else I've heard for a long time, and it's all the better for that!

Cool (for Cats?)

Before this tune really gets stuck in your brain and for those of you over 35, has it borrowed something from the melody of Cool for Cats by Squeeze? That said, great song, love the big booming drum intro, the swirling synths and fist-punching lines like "We've got the vision, now let's have some fun!!" You just want to hear it again, and again, and again...

So, so, so good

Single of the year so far? Easily. Best song on "Oracular..."? I'm not so sure...

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Finding an unlikely middle point between Suicide's hostile, proto-electro punk art noise and the sardonic, pop-friendly sound of the Flaming Lips, MGMT started as electroclash musical terrorists but quickly grew into an eclectic, brainy pop group with psychedelic overtones. MGMT first formed in 2002, during Ben Goldwasser and Andrew Van Wyngarden's freshman year as art students at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. The band was initially known as the Management, and its shows consisted...
