iTunes Review

After being rubbed raw by producer Steve Albini for Rid of Me, PJ Harvey split from her band and worked alongside producers Flood (U2, Nine Inch Nails) and John Parish on the her third studio release. Together, they achieve a deeper, richer tone accentuating the bluesy origin of her songwriting. The arrangements, played mostly by Harvey with embellishments from guitarist Joe Gore (Tom Waits), organist Mick Harvey (no relation), and multi-instrumentalist Parish, are kept minimal. The album begins with a stark, blues guitar riff and a lingering e-Bow note as Harvey's voice raises to a distorted rage over the title track. "Meet Ze Monsta" chugs with a machinist rhythm reminiscent of the Stooges. "Teclo," with Harvey on guitar, organ, piano, chimes, and bell, percolates on a circular riff that builds in obsessive desire. Where previous releases focused on her band's explosive intensity, here Harvey sculpts an artful portrait filled with dramatic shadows and fulfilling light.

Possibly one of the best albums I've heard. I'd read quite a lot of praise about PJ Harvey so I decided to give her a try. I was expecting typical singer-songwriter fare, but instead I found something totally different and unique. Her lyrics are a tad offbeat (which is by no means a bad thing, quite the opposite in fact), and throughout the album there are distorted guitars and PJ's unique voice, something that puts her in a different league to other singer-songwriters. A classic!

One of my all time favourites...

I must admit to being on a crusade to introduce PJ to the world, well my friends anyway. Although the more mainstream 'stories from the city' was the one to clinch a wider audience including my friends this remains for me the pinnacle its such a perfect mix of PJ containing the raw and aggressive sounds of other works beautifully woven with the smoother more polished offerings of 'stories'.

PJ Harvey is unique!

Amazing sounds. She sounds like an angel - makes the rest of the music business all seem so dull. A true one off.

During the alternative rock explosion, several female singer/songwriters rose to prominence, but few have proved as distinctive or as widely praised as Polly Jean Harvey. Over the course of her career, Harvey established herself as one of the most individual and influential songwriters of her era, exploring themes of sex, love, and religion with unnerving honesty, dark humor, and a twisted theatricality. At the outset, she led the trio PJ Harvey, which delivered her stark songs with bruisingly powerful,...
