Editors’ Notes

The seeds of the Dead Weather were first sprinkled during the Kills' opening slot for the Raconteurs. Jack White was given doctor's orders to take it easy on the vocals, then inviting Alison Mosshart to help out. All went so well, they took things into the studio along with Raconteurs' Jack Lawrence and Queens of the Stone Age's Dean Fertita. The result? Horehound — a deep and dark sojourn into electrified rock with stuttering funk backbeats (courtesy of Mr. White who anchors the group as drummer, but pops up with the occasional line and vocal tic all throughout). Electric organ and fuzz-ed up bass ride up alongside Mossheart's grimy, rock-addled vocals on "Treat Me Like Your Mother" and "Hand You Up From the Heavens" while other tracks show a sense of experimentation akin to the rhythm-based freakouts of early Jamaican dub. Easily the most forward-thinking project that Mr. Jack White has been involved in and undoubtedly a triumph.

The first true rock and roll album for a long time…and absolutely brilliant!

I was luck enough to have caught The Dead Weather at Glastonbury this year and was blown away buy their energy and sheer raw power. Jack White as a drummer is no mean slouch and as I stood spellbound, I just hopped the album would be as good and manage to keep that vibe they showed on stage. I need not have worried. In short if you like good raw edged rock and roll I think this is the best and freshest thing I have heard in ages. I have read other reviews that say Jack White has spread himself to thin and its starting to show. I am afraid I would totally disagree with that view. Just because it was recorded in weeks as apposed to moths or years in fact only makes it more rock and roll! Yes there are a few weak tracks in comparison to the others, but the album is so strong they are still good tracks. In a word if you love Jack White you should and probably will get this and will not be disappointed. If you don’t hell this is a good band album, and it’s the band ande the whole vibe that makes this absolutely brilliant! Give it a try.

Deadweather Debut

Having been a fan of Jack White's undoubted musical talent since listening to Elephant several years back, and more recently The Kills, I was ecstatic to find that two of my favourite musicians were to collaborate, and was eager to see the results. Formed in Nashville earlier this year, Jack White, Alison mosshart, Jack's Raconteurs bandmate and bassist Jack Lawrence, and Dead Fertita of QOTSA fame, who has the unenviable task, nonetheless carried off well, of taking up guitar duties in place of Jack, completing a mouthwatering line up for any garage/blues rock fan. With Jack having started out his musical career as a drummer, before switching to guitar, it comes as no real surprise that he has taken to them once again, allowing the rest of the band's creative talents a chance to emerge above his star status. With songwriting and vocal duties spread across the board, the record feels very much like a joint effort, which many people may feel diminishes Jacks abilities, but seems very much intentional on his part. With Jack only commanding the drum beats and occasional back up vocals, the rest of the band are not left in his shadow. Critics questioned the choice of Mosshart as lead singer, but I feel her style is most suited to a band such as this, where her raw energy and swagger carry the songs well, and will be especially effective live. Any fan of blues and garage rock, or of any of the bands involving the members will find something to enjoy on this record. The record also incorporates several other genres to keep things fresh. A basic blues riff and slow pacing of '60 feet tall', lulls the listener into a false sense of security, before first single 'Hang you from the Heavens' crashes in with classic White Stripes esque crunching power chords, with Alison singing sinister, satanic like lyrics over the top, including the chorus line of 'I'll drag you to the devil, and hang you up from the heavens'. The next three tracks that follow are arguably the best section of the album, with White penned track 'Cut like a buffalo', a curious song lyrically, but with a memorable beat, following onto 'So Far from you Weapon', and possibly the strongest track on the recor d and next single, 'Treat me like your mother', an energetic and catchy guitar driven track, with Alison and Jack trading lyrics with an interesting arranged chorus, spelling out the word M-A-N-I-P-U-L-A-T-E, over and over. The only cover version on the album, Bob Dylans 'New Pony' is obviously not as strong as Dylans version, but offers an interesting enough take on the song, with the inclusion of female vocals, to warrant its input. After what follows a raucous garage rock/metal wail of 'Bone House', giving way to slow paced tracks '3 birds' and 'No hassle night', as the album draws to a close with a simplistic yet brilliant track harping back to the old fashioned blues numbers with 'Will there be enough water', a song that pushes beyond the 6 minute barrier, while only involving the same lyrics repeated again several times. With the recent launch of his record label, Third Man Records, Jack obviously seems determined to take more of a back seat, to craft his art in the aesthetic side of music production, while having fun, and honing the talents of his favourite musicians and peers at the same time. While this album will distract White's fans for the time being, it may also leave them craving the next White Stripes record that much more.

Another AMAZING group from Jack White

How does he do it? To me this is the best group of musicians that Jack White has put together and that is a hell of statement to make given The White Stripes, Raconteurs etc. Horehound is arguably the best album to be released by a debut band this year and will take a lot to be beaten. The energy, rawness and range of genres that are presented in the album is testimony to Messrs White, Fertita, Lawrence and Miss Mosshart. They are perefct together. The album sounds as though it was a big jam session that got recorded. Guys please, please don't let this be a one-off. Really tough to pick-out a standout track on the album, but if pushed I would go for "Treat Me Like Your Mother". Why? Simple it showcases the vocal skills of Alison Mosshart, the amazing drumming/vocals of Jack White and great musicianship from Jack Lawrence and Dean Fertita. Also, it is well worth downloading the cover of the Tubeway Army's "Are Friends Electric" - simply amazing. Another project founded by Jack White, Dead Weather began after the Raconteurs toured the U.S. with the Kills in summer 2008. Toward the end of the tour, bronchitis made it difficult for White to sing as much as usual, so Kills singer Alison Mosshart was drafted to sing several of his songs.
