something a bit different...

When you think Kevin Max you think unmistakable vocal, quirky image, great variety of well crafted material. With The Blood, these things remain true, but the direction he's gone in here is a bit of a suprise, as are some of the collaborations. Direction wise, this is more in your face gospel and CCM than his previous albums. It also feels a bit retro and 70s sounding with stuff like One Way - One Blood (Johny Cash moment) and his introductory Old Rugged Cross. His collaboration with Chris Sligh is a bit of a grower, but for me the biggest suprise package is his version of George Michael's They Won't Go When I Go from the excellent Listen Without Prejudice. Musically its so dressed down which means the vocal has more power, and while its not the most immediate track on the album it really keeps you when it gets you. My personal favourite is The Old Rugged Cross, or perhaps One Way - One Blood... or The Cross. Actually its whichever one I'm listening to at the time!

So disappointing

I'm a big fan of most of Kevin Max's stuff and so naturally was excited at the prospect of a new album. The imposter was fantastic and I loved the fascinating Christmas album, but I just don't get this album at all. I appreciate the thought behind the album, but just don't feel that musically it does it justice. I couldn't get into any of the tracks at all and was so disappointed. This one was just not for me.

MAXimum fun (see what I've done there)

I'm a big fan of Kevin Max after I bought his debut album several years ago. His unique style is still as unique and fresh as it was back then. It's hugely enjoyable to listen to and I love his version of the Old Rugged Cross - it has a beautiful old time feel to it.

Years Active: '00s

Often perceived as the eccentric, attention-seeking member of the CCM trio DC Talk, Kevin Max grew up outside of Grand Rapids, MI. Formerly known as Kevin Smith, music played a vital part in his formative years. Max started singing at the age of four and remembers "being carted around to schools, churches, and radio programs." He attended college at Virginia's Liberty University, where he met fellow DC Talk members Toby McKeehan and Michael Tait. The three formed the band in 1987, merging the styles...
