iTunes Review

While Like A Virgin established Madonna as an ’80s MTV icon, True Blue, her third album, ensured she was no flash in the pan. Bad movies would jeopardize her star-power somewhat, but the dancefloor was always Madonna’s refuge and her image was always up for changing. This time it’s thick eyebrows and short, smart blonde locks. Still, a dancefloor diva is not necessarily a worldwide superstar yet, and True Blue works with greater ambition. The dance grooves are meatier. “Open Your Heart” is unstoppable and immediate. “La Isla Bonita” tweaks a Latin rhythm. “Where’s the Party” plays up a carefree hedonist rave. But “Live to Tell” is the ballad open for contemplation and in search of beauty. “Papa Don’t Preach” is the controversial “keepin’ my baby” story-song of a young teen in conflict with parental authority, while “True Blue” pays homage to tough ’60s girl groups. As someone well-known for her image, Madonna used True Blue to also build her music.

Madonna secures her place on the superstar podium

The first album by a female performer to rocket straight to the British number one slot, True Blue is the album that heralded Madonna as a pop force the equal of Michael Jackson and Prince. 'Papa Don't Preach' broke away from the often mocked 'Minnie Mouse on helium' vocal of her earlier works, hosting a mature, toned down approach, especially emotive on 'Live To Tell', a portentous beauty and one of the eighties' stone cold classic power ballads. The driving 'Open Your Heart' came with a Jean-Baptiste Mondino video that showcased the lady's daring underwear-as-outerwear wardrobe, brassy crop and toned body, and Madonna's endless cycle of reinventions began here. 'La Isla Bonita' is a beautiful, haunting slow burner that exposes the romantic Latin heart under all those hard stares and kinetic dance moves. Between the fantastic variations in voice, theme and style, impeccability of production and sheer artistry of the accompanying videos, True Blue is more than a masterful pop album. This is where Madonna shed the disco tart persona and laid her cunning intelligence and genius for self promotion bare. This is where the icon was born.

A true pop classic

By far her greatest album, they just don't do albums this like anymore :-( Everything from the title track to Where's The Party every song is a classic. It's sad to hear the new rubbish from Madonna when she has done something so amazing as this.... CLASSIC 5/5

Oh my!

This is definitely one of her greatest albums. 'Where's The Party' is the best song by far, followed by 'White Heat'. I'd happily pay the price of the whole album for these 2 songs.

After stars reach a certain point, it's easy to forget what they became famous for and concentrate solely on their personas. Madonna is such a star. She rocketed to stardom so quickly in 1984 that it obscured most of her musical virtues. Appreciating her music became even more difficult as the decade wore on, as discussing her lifestyle became more common. However, one of Madonna's greatest achievements is how she has manipulated the media and the public with her music, her videos, her publicity,...
