Great film + Great Soundtrack
Really good, Jablonsky is a really good composer, one of my fave's
Great work from Steve!
I've heard comments around this score claiming it is too similar to that of the three transformer's films Steve has worked on; I really don't think that is the case here. There is a wonderful marriage of modern sounds from variety synth’s and epic orchestral sections; a good example of this would be the last minute of 'The Beacon Project'. Clearly from the title the central image of this film is a battleship, USS Missouri to be precise, when you stand in the presence of these ships there is a certain sense of awe you get from their scale and history which is very difficult to describe (if you've never seen a battleship up close and get the opportunity to I would highly recommend it). Obviously all music conveys emotions but I think that sense of awe is very difficult to capture, that being said 'We Have a Battleship' particularly from 1:20 onwards does so perfectly.
Not all of the tracks on this score are as 'easy' to listen to as others but it is music written for film and those tracks fit the scenes they were written for very well. That being said I honestly believe there are some real works of art on this score 'Hopper' probably being my personal favourite, I just think there is an unbelievable amount of emotion in that piece of music and in a way it does credit to those who fought on these battleships in the multiple wars they've seen.
Definitely worth a listen, particularly 'Hopper', 'The Art of War', 'The Beacon Project' and 'We Have a Battleship'.
Better Than The Film Itself
The music has a good, intense and exciting feel to it, for example 'The Art Of War' and 'Super Battle'. However, most of the tracks sound the same and are a bit quiet. Still, it kept me entertained throughout the album, if only the movie was as good.
