iTunes Review

When we want to explain what a maverick Elton John is in the world of pop music, we just point to Tumbleweed Connection. Eschewing the singer/songwriter pop sound of his first two records, he and writing partner Bernie Taupin create a loose concept album about the Old West, full of restrained emotion and ambling melodies—and it totally works. Meandering tunes like the bluesy "Amoreena" and bluegrass-inspired "Country Comfort" feel like the soundtrack to a perfect Western movie that exists only in our minds.

Huge flavour

This album is a very fine example of Elton John's work in the early, better, days. With Bernie's lyrics driving deep imagery from the first bar to the last beat, and with his full band around him, Elton accomplishes something close to miraculous; a tour of the American West and its history with full lip smacking apple pie flavour. Personal favourite is: Talking Old Soldiers, which gets close to Mr Bojangles, for striking a universal chord of sweet nostalgic sadness (if he'd only sung the visitor in a slightly different tone, Sammy Davis could have been over-turned!) I whole heartedly recommend this album, which I've played countless times in the last 20 years.

Tumbleweed Connection

I bought this album the first time around in 1970. It was my first Elton John purchase and turned me into an avid fan. I played it over and over until the record virtually wore out. It still sound fresh after all these years, Elton John at his best. It was fantastic then and it still is now. The songs have held the test of time and the lyrics are meaningful and thoughtful. Brings back many happy memories of my teenage years.

Elton John was the biggest pop star of the '70s, grabbing headlines and generating hits throughout the world. As it turned out, this was merely the first act in a remarkable career that kept him at the top of the charts for over 25 years. He charted a Top 40 hit single every year between 1970 and 1996, a sign that he knew how to both change with the times and mold the times to fit him. Initially marketed as a singer/songwriter, John soon revealed he could craft Beatlesque pop and pound out rockers...
