¡Pop Destroyed!

In Twelve ¡Forward, Russia! have created a stunningly fierce pop assault. It's spikey without ever being abrasive. The vocals are yelped until singer Tom Woodhead's vocals cords end up making a bloody mess in your ears. But underlying the entire track is pop. It's catchy, it's got handclaps and a sing-a-long "chorus" of sorts. Like Neighbours they're the perfect blend.

¡Forward, Russia!

Leeds is a town more easily associated with the indulgiant mainstream rock associated with bands like The Music or Kaiser Cheifs, this is what makes ¡Forward, Russia! so unique, they are not afraid to express them selves in a less acsessible way and stay true to the music they make. Thats why Twelve although not being one of their best songs is still a brilliant introduction to their sound, with its slicing guitar sound and energetic vocals along side an innovative group sound that is best seen live buut still comes over well on mp3.

Intelligent lyrics and angular beats reminiscent of an early XTC are reflected in a modern way, never being too brash to be unlistenable and never being predictable enough to ignore. I have the first Eighteen tracks and they are all superb. And all this despite being the first artist on iTune's I've seen to have their name spelt wrong! They have another track on iTunes on the In The City compilation (called Fourteen) but it doesn't show up in the artist page.

Tom Woodhead (vocals/synth), Rob Canning (bass), Katie Nicholls (drums), and Whiskas (guitar) create the angst-ridden post-punk-inspired sound of ¡Forward, Russia! Formerly of Black Helicopters, Canning and Woodhead joined siblings Nicholls and Whiskas in their native Leeds, England, in 2004 to form the indie rock quartet and their own label, Dance to the Radio. ¡Forward, Russia! toured the U.K. incessantly during their first year together while also issuing their debut, a split single with This...
