Be selective

Hearing the Paris metro singing '40' after they played live was a joy and I remember coming back to put this album on and feeling disappointed. Here the edges are getting smoother and after seeing them live you feel this is a 'studio' album. But 'Surrender' New Years Day and 'Two Hearts' and 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' (better on the live blood red sky) have great passion. But with this epic 'remaster' I just don't see the point of all these rather feeble remixes. Perhaps a difficult 3rd album after magnificent boy and october.

Red Light!

A good album - although Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Year's Day are now way too overplayed. It's the second half that contains the really interesting stuff - Two Hearts, Red Light and Surrender are an interesting glimpse into a possible 80s nightclub pop direction that U2 could have gone into. However, the bonus disc is appalling - do we really need a load more remixes? And Angels Tied To The Ground is no more than a semi-idea with modern day Bono murmuring over the top. U2 have been flogging nonsense from their back catalogue for way too long now.

War was U2's third album and the one that saw them begin to carve out a clear identity for themselves. Having not been born when War was first released it is interesting to listen to the work of a band that would eventually conquer the globe with their music. Many of the songs, such as Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Year's Day retain their potency and others such as Two Hearts Beat As One are great songs. However, the rest of the album hasnt aged well and doesnt beg for multiple listens. Also, the deluxe additions, bar 'Treasure' are very poor and is what warrants my three star rating since they offer practically nothing. Perhaps a War-era live show would have been better, given the bands politcal background at the time?

Through a combination of zealous righteousness and post-punk experimentalism, U2 became one of the most popular rock & roll bands in the world -- equally known for their sweeping sound as for their grandiose statements about politics and religion. The Edge provided the group with a signature sound by creating sweeping sonic landscapes with his heavily processed, echoed guitars. Though the Edge's style wasn't conventional, the rhythm section of Larry Mullen, Jr. and Adam Clayton played the songs...
