One Of The Best

I didn't really need to write a review as I think the other reviewers have said it all but an album of such calibre is rare indeed. A poetic pop masterpiece from Matt Johnson. Every track is perfect and 20 years on this album is still regularly on my CD player (and turntable). If you are a genuine music fan you won't be disappointed. As already stated Jools Holland's piano on Uncertain Smile will set your senses tingling. Buy it !

Amazing after all of these years

Not sure why, but every Birthday I can't help repeating the lines "All desires have been denied to put me in this state of mind, Another year older & what have I done - My aspirations have shriveled in the sun" Whilst not the most positive thinking, for some reason it always cheers me up, and reminds me of my Youth. These lines will live with me forever, and are a constant reminder to stay positive! Jools Hollands Solo on Uncertain Smile is worth the purchase price alone, was completely floored by this the first time I heard the album. But the whole album is perfect. Everything is delivered very simply and naturally and nothing sounds over produced. Timeless Music that hasn't aged. However for those missing "Perfect" and complaining about the Cover Art .... THIS IS THE ORIGINAL TRACKLISTING AND COVER ART! When it was rereleased on CD they used another Cover Art with a Man Screaming, and they added extra tracks including the sublime "Perfect". The Tape version also had Perfect on it. The original LP version was how iTunes has it, and I think how Matt Johnson intended it to be. Bit of a shame I know as Perfect is a great track, remember buying the Tape Version as as the Album just to get hold of it. A classic!

solid gold

Am I really only the second person to review this album? Its probably my faveourite record ever. its a pop master piece - poetic thought provoking melodic harmonic sonically rich kalaedoscopic and down to earth at the same time. a sheer delight even the jools holland piano solo is amazing! really. shame the covers not the original though.

The The was the guise of Matt Johnson, a mercurial singer/songwriter whose music ran the gamut from dance-pop to country. Born August 15, 1961, in London, Johnson was raised in the flat above his father's pub, the Two Puddings, a haven for well-known celebrities and criminals; he also became exposed to music at the nightclubs and dancehalls owned by his uncle, where he saw performers like Howlin' Wolf, the Kinks, and Muddy Waters. Johnson formed his first band, Roadstar, when he was 11; at the age...
