iTunes Review

Slaughter of the Soul isn’t just a landmark in melodic death metal; it’s one of the very best albums ever released by a Swedish metal band. Which is saying something, considering that, when it comes to metal, Swedes are world-class hell-raisers. At the Gates’ unconventional union of classical flourishes and bestial devastation reaches a fever pitch on the stretch between “Into the Dead Sky” and “World of Lies”. Picture an ornate cathedral; now picture it smeared in gore and guts. That’s what this music sounds like—and it’s electrifying.

By the far the most influential melodic death metal outfit, At the Gates will always be remembered for establishing the Gothenburg sound. Their punishing buzzsaw riffs hurl past you at lightspeed while Tomas Lindberg's schizophrenic screams is harsh on the ears. Today's metalcore bands do more than influence, they outright plaigarise. Accept no imitations, this is the standard by which all melo-death is measured.

The Best Death Metal Album Ever!!!!

I'm 11 and love metal music. I bought Blinded By Fear and Suicide Nation and wanted more.I got the CD and wasn't dissapointed. Tomas Lindberg's vocals are so good especially on Slaughter Of The Soul and Captor Of Sin. The guitar riffs are excellent and precise although extemely heavy. The blast beats are just crazily fast. Highlights: Suicide Nation Slaughter Of The Soul Under a Serpent Sun Blinded By Fear Cold Captor Of Sin Legion Bister Verklighet The rest are all good. I also recommend Decapitated, Nile, Carcass, Bolt Thrower and for ultimate death metal, Cannibal Corpse.

What a record

This is one of the very few metal records that can be called "Perfect"!!!! there is not a bad song on here! nuff said.

One of the more melodic death metal bands to expand beyond Sweden and spread their sound across the world alongside peers such as Entombed, At the Gates played a significant role in the death metal genre before breaking up in 1996, leading to the formation of the Haunted. The group's first lineup -- Tomas Lindberg (vocals), Anders Bjorler (guitars), Adrian Erlandsson (drums), Jonas Bjorler (bass), and Alf Svensson (guitars) -- formed in late 1990, recording the Gardens of Grief EP for the Dolores...
