The start of the long road back....

This is a very good Quo album if not quite a great one. But when it originally came out in 1999 it was like a reawakening after a very long sleep. It is largely accepted that the band's worst period, artistically, was during the previous 8 years and this album contained several tracks that indicated a return to form and a brighter future. Indeed it did and we've had 3 excellent albums since with another on the way (Quid Pro Quo) presently causing great excitement with the few snippets of it we've had. The highlight here for me is "Shine On" which basically documents Rick Parfitt's dice with death in 1997 after a serious heart attack and a quadruple bypass operation. It bristles with old fashioned Quo riffs quietly building from a menacing first few chords. There is a knowledgeable piece of remastering by Mike Paxman as well who produced the original release. This remaster also boasts the original artwork which was ditched at the last minute for the tacky pub sign that the management at the time felt would be easier to promote and which resulted in the subsequent pub tour.

Before that, the band managed to reach number 12 in the U.S. with the psychedelic classic "Pictures of Matchstick Men" (a Top Ten hit in the U.K.). Following that single,...
