It grows and grows.....

I am a fan of the Unthanks and perhaps thought that this was going to be an "interesting diversion" - whilst it is, it has also grown and grown.

Stand out tracks for me are Bird Guhl, Lullaby for Hamza and Spiralling, but every track has its own hook. A clog dance version of Dondestan should form part of any and every protest chant.....

Wow.

This is one of those 'perfect storm' albums. There is a colossal clash of all relevant pieces here to create something so vastly enchanting that it will not leave you alone. The 'pieces' I describe are thus. The Unthanks, a pair I'd never hear of but two girls in possession of etherial harmonic capabilities; the writing of two of the modern era's classic writers, Robert Wyatt, a much under rated talent, and Antony Heggarty, a unique talent indeed. These elements are wrapped up in the eerie setting of Union Chapel in London. The result is simply beautiful. I am now off to listen to more of The Unthanks work, and to beat myself for not listening to more of Robert Wyatt's music, even though I saw his cover of 'Shipbuilding' as a kid and was intrigued. Damn.

*cough* *cough*

is no one else a bit annoyed by that?? the recording is sadly ruined by the noise of the audience. i'm no sound engineer but surely something could have been done to minimise the pick up from the audience... oh well
