iTunes Review

Taking a page from E.S.T and The Bad Plus, Manchester, England’s Gogo Penguin push outside the traditional jazz piano-trio format with their synthesis of ringing piano melodies, muscular rock rhythms, tangled electronic beats, dubby postproduction touches, and even bits of modern classical. Featuring pianist Chris Illingworth, new bassist Nick Blacka, and drummer Rob Turner, the group’s second album moves further down that path with standouts like the contemplative “Murmuration,” the manic and jaunty “Garden Dog Barbecue,” and the circular “Kamaloka.”

Superb follow-up to the first album

I love these guys. The first album (Fanfares) was great to start with and just continued to grow. This is just as good. Great variety across the album. They seem to really know how to create build up in songs and change of tempo. Fingers crossed for a Mercury prize nomination in the future.

I saw them live in Bristol a few months back - the talent is remarkable. See them if you can.

Gogogogogogo Penguin

Hot hot hot, amazing feel and pace to this album. These guys should be enormous but i selfishly would like them to remain the hidden gem waiting for others to discover them or for the converted to lead them to

Brilliant...

I’m a 70’s rocker at heart but this is so refreshing, innovative and addictive. Highly recommended...

Years Active: '10s

Experimental jazz piano trio GoGo Penguin were formed in Manchester, England in 2012 by pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka, and drummer Rob Turner. They released a pair of albums on the Gondwana label, announcing themselves with 2012's Fanfares, then expanding their sonic scope with 2014's...
