Editors’ Notes

On 1996's I Feel Alright Steve Earle created a near classic album, employing elements of blues, rock, folk and country into an adventurous album that still sounds fresh. Whether chronicling lost loves on the folksy "Now She's Gone," crazed wild men on the blues rocker "The Unrepentant," or drug abuse on "CCKMP," Earle lends a spotlight to an army of lost souls. But despite plenty of twangy, electric guitars and attitude, Earle is at heart a sensitive soul. For proof, check out "Hard-Core Troubadour" or "Hurtin' Me, Hurtin' You").

A marker in the sand

Whatever you're doing, whatever you're listening to, put it on pause. Listen to this CD. I've been listening to SE from the first album 'Guitar Town' and this one 'I Feel Alright' is my favourite. From the first track you know this CD is going to be good. A girlfriend and I saw him in Birmingham (England) on the album tour. He had recently been released from Jail and was touring "coz I ain't got a drivin' licence no more so I thought I'd tour around instead" he then went on to say "I do having a fishing licence I'm quite proud of right now!" On Valentines day the year previous, Steve forgot to buy a card or flowers for the woman in his life. The one who had stuck by him whilst he was in jail. He felt so bad he went to his room and wrote her the song that now occuplies 7th position on the CD. And that is the premis of the whole album. Songs from the heart. Beautifully crafted and performed with casual brilliance. That girlfriend of mine became my Wife, it was our first concert together, Steves' first tour of the UK and his first album after his release. A true marker in the sand.

In the strictest sense, Steve Earle isn't a country artist; he's a roots rocker. Earle emerged in the mid-'80s, after Bruce Springsteen had popularized populist rock & roll and Dwight Yoakam had kick-started the neo-traditionalist movement in country music. At first, Earle appeared to be more indebted to the rock side than country, as he played a stripped-down, neo-rockabilly style that occasionally verged on outlaw country. However, his unwillingness to conform to the rules of Nashville or rock...
