iTunes Review

Recorded as a soundtrack for Prince’s directorial debut, Under the Cherry Moon, Parade melds his deepening funk explorations with a fascination for Sgt. Pepper’s-era Beatles. The album comes on strong and playful, stripped-back yet bursting with colour. There are a handful of classics here in the steel-drum double-dutch of “New Position” and the ‘40s fantasia “Under the Cherry Moon”, but nothing reaches the heights of “Kiss”, which makes more of empty space than most artists make of sound.

Essential Prince

This is Prince at his most inventive, creative, successful and maginficent (and, arguably, commercially successful). Buy it, listen to it, love it, and then love it even more. Just absolute genius.

I personally feel that this is the best album that Prince has ever released. It contains a mixture of musical styles ranging from the upbeat pop hit Kiss, to a slower and more moving Sometimes It Snows in April, to the more usual Prince-esque sensual beat and lyrics of New Position. If you want to hear a diversity of genres from Prince, then I feel this the best album of his to buy.

Long live Christopher Tracy

This is the first Prince album I bought when I was 13; it's still my favourite Prince album. It contains some of my most loved Prince songs, including the uplifting Mountains (a forgotten single that never makes it onto his greatest hits collections) and the sublime I Wonder U. I love it when the frantic beats of Life Can Be So Nice end so abruptly to be followed by the gorgeously mellow piano-driven Venus De Milo. The album version of funk-pop classic Kiss is slightly shorter than the single version, but this is because it segues perfectly into Anotherloverholenyohead (another brilliant but overlooked single). I will always have a soft spot for this album.

Few artists have created a body of work as rich and varied as Prince. During the '80s, he emerged as one of the most singular talents of the rock & roll era, capable of seamlessly tying together pop, funk, folk, and rock. Not only did he release a series of groundbreaking albums; he toured frequently, produced albums, wrote songs for many other artists, and recorded hundreds of songs that still lie unreleased in his vaults. With each album he released, Prince showed remarkable stylistic growth...
