The greatest opera recording of all time!

A bold statement, I don't mean this is the greatest opera all of all time but this recording, however, from 1977 with La scala forces under Abbado at his fiery best is, in my opinion the greatest opera recording of all time.

It came straight from some (apparently) spectacular stage performances. Carreras at the peak of his powers alongside the ever wonderful Freni who gives a masterclass and Ghiaurov at his best. These performances on their own would make any good recording great but when you add Cappuccilli's searing performance in the title role and van Dam in the role of Paolo a great recording becomes the best ever. Try the end of the council chamber scene where Simon makes Paolo curse himself and you'll hear what I mean.

If you love Verdi, any of these singers or just want something to blow you into the stratosphere then buy this recording. You won't regret it.
