Something illusory

I've been a big Cave Painting fan ever since the release of their 2011 EP "You'll Be Running Soon". Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on "You'll Be Running Soon" where, Smallwood's presence became more apparent. I think “Midnight Love” was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Simon, McCawley and Snabel. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to "Our Click Say Yeah". In this song, Kane addresses the problems of abusive political authority. "So Calm" is the most moving pop song of 2012, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. This new album seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like "Gator" and "Only Us". "Rio" is also a great, great song, and a personal favourite.

Votive Life

Votive Life combines fresh modernity with a hazy indie sound that you can't quite pin down. Lyrically intelligent and driven along by some pounding Velvets-style drumming, Cave painting have nailed some great tunes. Stand outs are the epic sounding 'Nickel' , the coolly percussive 'Gator' and 'Rio', which appears to use T.S Elliot's ' The Hollow Men' as a theme, rather than samba or Duran Duran...could be wrong though...

Cave painting

Brilliant album lads with some great songs, love Gator especially. Well done you should be proud!
