Album of the decade

Best album of Andy Leek and best album of recent times.

Waking up the World

A great range of original arrangements, tempos and mix of different instruments, emotions ( from light to dark, soulfulness and teasing) and subject matter ( love, philosophy, hedonism, modern British culture/nilihism/materialism/consumerism, fame/ego, optimism, confessional self reproach..)

It definitely shows off a powerful vocal range: clean, clear sounds travelling from delight, protective feelings, reproach and steely-eyed/profound observations. Some of the vocals can be described as elastic and gliding, even haunting ,with a contrast of spoken and sung lyrics (track 13). The spoken voice is one of authority and truth.

Some of the instruments take on a whole life of their own, such as the harmonica, which has an almost characteristic , laid back, cheeky , witty and personal feeling. There is a diversity of instrument sounds, such as brass, electric, acoustic guitar, with soothing , catchy harmonies, dramatic ends and beats . It shows off a great and range of working and experience of musical knowledge

This cd's subject matter is both sacred and profane/profound; earthy and spiritual: with sounds that are expressionistic, such as the first song : Waking up the World, which actually sounds as it meant to: a gentle crescendo in the chorus, unexpectedly climaxing into waking up ( the world).

The lyric writing is always strongly crafted: intelligent and poetic/metaphoric: precise, succinct and impressionistic: "kamikaze smile" is rather like the visual accuracy of Brancusi's sculpture: The Cockerel, which shows the animal's essence and sound ( Track 14).

Especial highlights for me include : Tracks 4, 5, 9, 11, 13, 14,16 ( it was so difficult to choose, since all the songs are of very high quality and production ) .

Do catch it, if you can! A lot of talent, here.
