This ones for Delaine

For a long time, I've been meaning to listen to this band. Big Star are referenced by so many bands, especially Teenage Fanclub and I really wanted to find out what all the fuss is about. It's taken Ping however to finally spur me on to eventually take a listen. Thanks Delaine.

Now I've had a few listens to the album, what I'm most gutted about, is why the he'll didn't I do this a long time ago. Wonderful songwriting, great vocals, which at times have a real feel of vulnerability about them and some top drawer playing. How this band weren't enormous is frankly beyond me. What makes this even more special however, is that the majority of this record is timeless. A lot of it could have been recorded this year, especially as the Americana sound, if I can call it that, is so much back in favour. You want to know where Band of Horses and their ilk get the sound from. Look no further.

This is a bold statement, but Big Star are probably one of, if not the most commercially unnoticed but influential band ever. You seriously need to hear this album.

Is there another love song as great as Big Star's 'Thirteen',

Q. Is there another love song as great as Big Star's 'Thirteen'?

A. 'No'.

Seriously; take the greatest love song you ever knew and stand it next to 'Thirteen'; unless it is 'Birthday Song' by The Fall, it will be dust. And you won't be able to stop playing 'Thirteen' on repeat. This song is so good that you can listen to it on mp3 and it sounds better than if you play it on original-pressing, virgin vinyl that's been cleaned on a £600 record-cleaner and is spinning on a state of the art air -cushioned turntable through a humungously powered valve-amp. This is a fact! :-) What it would be to hear it on crackly MW radio under the bed covers when you were fourteen with no ability to tape-record it and only Woolworths as your local record stockist! ...

Big Star did write and perform a bunch of other great songs; many of them are on this album. But they didn't have to.

Formed: 1971 in Memphis, TN

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

The quintessential American power pop band, Big Star remains one of the most mythic and influential cult acts in all of rock & roll. Originally led by the singing and songwriting duo of Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, the Memphis-based group fused the strongest elements of the British Invasion era -- the melodic invention of the Beatles, the whiplash guitars of the Who, and the radiant harmonies of the Byrds -- into a ramshackle but poignantly beautiful sound that recaptured the spirit of pop's past...
