Their third masterpiece

I bought this on vinyl in 1988, when I was 16. I had just discovered the Dream Syndicate and I absolutely loved it. 24 years later this was my first iTunes purchase. I haven't listened to it in 10 years (only because I moved to another country and did not manage to bring my LPs with me). Well I still love this record every bit as much as I used to do.
It is not a miracle of youthful restless (and reckless!) creativity as The Days of Wine and Roses; it does not have the ambition (once again miraculously fulfilled) of the Medicine Show. Yet... This is vintage Syndicate. It is not an extraordinary overachievement as the first two masterpieces, but it is has a feel of its own. It sounds like the work of a band that is totally aware of its means, fully inspired and simply focused on doing what it does best: playing powerful, poetic, honest and moving rock. The album is a perfect blend of razor-sharp psychedelic post-punk, romantic rock ballads, and twisted hard blues. The band is perfectly oiled up and plays with effortless self assurance: everything falls together and fits together, giving to the album great consistency and solidity. But don't get me wrong, the expressive urgency, soulfulness and aching sensibility are all there. But with a sort of mature composure and balance that are unique to this album.
It is not as original and innovative as the first two albums of the band, but it is a very accomplished work: ten songs perfectly pieced together and without any weak moment.
The rhythm session runs at full steam providing a rock solid support. The guitars...well these are the DS guys! And Steve offers one of its best vocal performance on record.
This album demonstrates that also in the Eighties there was some great rock. A classic album and a must-have for any rock lover.
P.s. thank you guys, after 24 years these stories still make me feel that I have a soul and I am not a ghost yet!!

Dream Syndicate are at the foundation (alongside the Velvet Underground, the Stooges, and R.E.M.) of contemporary alternative music simply because at the time when most bands were experimenting with new technology, the Syndicate deigned to bring back the guitar. Fronted by Steve Wynn (b. Feb. 21, 1960) and including Karl Precoda (guitar), Dennis Duck (drums), and Kendra Smith (bass), the band formed in Los Angeles after Smith and Wynn had relocated there from Davis, CA. They debuted with a self-titled,...
