Album Review

On her 2007 debut, Lissie’s songwriting sometimes struggled to keep up with her voice. The two share more equal footing throughout Why You Runnin’, a five-song EP that mixes Americana, folk, and Southern balladry into swirling patterns. Recorded in her adopted hometown of Ojai, CA — one of the few places in the world to have a “pink moment” at sunset, where rose-colored light splashes across the Topatopa Mountains — the songs are indebted to the stunning geography that inspired them, and Lissie uses her vocals to conjure up landscapes of rivers, prairieland, and heartache. She’s a fantastic singer, blessed with enough power to rival a pop vocalist but more aligned with folk sirens like Neko Case and Patty Griffin. On “Wedding Bells,” she tweaks an old Hank Williams song by adding minor chords, handclaps, and thickly stacked harmonies, while the piano ballad “Oh Mississippi” (produced by Ed Harcourt, no stranger to piano ballads himself) finds her serenading the river that bordered her childhood home. Why You Runnin’ may only be an EP — one can only hope Lissie has enough slow-smoked melody in her arsenal to sustain an entire album — but it's one of 2009’s finest folk releases regardless.

Sublime

Thank you for featuring this amazing artist on the main iTunes page, otherwise I would have missed this absolute gem

Please speed up the LP release date!

Every week I download the fantastic iTunes free single to enlighten and broaden my musical horizons... Its rare that I am stunned enough by a new artist to want to hear more, so I was delighted to be introduced to Lizzie. There are parallels to Fleetwood Mac and other artists but this is far from a bad thing and the musicianship and recordings are stunning and well worth adding to your collection. Roll on the LP release.

:D

This is an amazing EP each song is full of character and its a shame that things like this are hidden in the shadow of the charts when it is obvisouly fantastic. My personal favourite from this EP is everywhere i go but the others are great too, I cant wait till the full album is released in June :D

Lissie Maurus was raised in the riverside town of Rock Island, Illinois, and she drew upon those blue-collar Midwestern origins to create her own form of indie folk music. The granddaughter of an international barbershop quartet champion, she grew up singing in theater productions, eventually picking up the guitar and playing her own songs at local coffee shops as a teenager. Lissie was also something of a rebel; she got thrown out of high school during her senior year, spent a brief period at Colorado...
