Album Review

Sunless Day's debut LP comes on like a ragged, lo-fi take on stoner rock — motored by thick, lumbering riffs and dense, sludgy production, Electric Ahhh... nevertheless boasts catchy West Coast-styled pop melodies as well, tempering the hyperbolic melodrama of the band's solos with a level of songcraft often missing from the genre. For a record that seemingly doesn't aspire to any real greatness, there's an undeniable charm at work here — frontman Reverend Rich Scremaglia is the owner of a classic garage rock voice, and the songs consolidate the breadth of their influences with genuine cleverness and wit. Electric Ahhh... is the type of disc that lives or dies based almost solely on its context, though — heard while sitting around the house on a Sunday afternoon, it's nothing remarkable, but on the kind of day completely contrary to the band's own moniker, driving with the top down, the radio cranked, and the bong cradled between your legs, it's pretty damn cool.
